Levofloxacin Infusion
Manufactured by Onco India International
Overview
Levofloxacin Infusion is a sterile intravenous formulation of the broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic Levofloxacin. It is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections and is administered through slow intravenous infusion once or twice daily, depending on the type and severity of infection as well as the susceptibility of the causative pathogen.
Dosage and Administration
-
Route: Intravenous infusion only (slow infusion)
-
Frequency: Once or twice daily
-
Dosage: Determined by infection severity, site, and pathogen sensitivity
Infusion time requirements:
-
At least 30 minutes for 250 mg Levofloxacin
-
At least 60 minutes for 500 mg Levofloxacin
After initial intravenous therapy, treatment may be continued with an appropriate oral Levofloxacin formulation, as both oral and parenteral forms are bioequivalent. This allows continuation of therapy without dose adjustment.
Clinical Considerations
-
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA):
MRSA strains are usually resistant to fluoroquinolones, including levofloxacin. Therefore, levofloxacin infusion is not recommended for the treatment of known or suspected MRSA infections unless:-
Laboratory testing confirms susceptibility, and
-
Commonly recommended antibacterial agents are inappropriate.
