Anti-Rabies Vaccine – Onco India International
What is Anti-Rabies Vaccine?
The Anti-Rabies Vaccine is a life-saving biological product that protects against rabies, a deadly viral infection caused by the Lyssavirus genus.
Rabies is most commonly transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals such as dogs, bats, foxes, or raccoons.
Since rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, timely vaccination after exposure is critical.
Overview
-
Type of Vaccine: Inactivated rabies virus vaccine
-
Form: Sterile lyophilized powder or liquid solution for injection
-
Route of Administration: Intramuscular (IM) or Intradermal (ID), as per national guidelines
-
Packaging: Supplied in single-dose vials or prefilled syringes, with/without diluent
Description
Rabies continues to be a major public health concern, especially across Asia and Africa.
The Anti-Rabies Vaccine by Onco India International can be used for both pre-exposure (prevention) and post-exposure (treatment after suspected exposure) prophylaxis.
It contains an inactivated rabies virus that activates the immune system to produce virus-neutralizing antibodies (VNAs), which block the virus from reaching the brain and spinal cord, effectively stopping the progression of the disease.
Uses / Indications
-
For all animal bites and scratches to prevent rabies infection
-
Suitable for both pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis
Benefits
-
Prevents a fatal disease when administered properly and on time
-
Safe and effective across all age groups (infants, children, adults, elderly, and pregnant women)
-
Provides long-lasting immune protection (booster required only for high-risk groups)
-
Can be used in immunocompromised patients with medical supervision
-
Demonstrates very high success rates in preventing rabies, even after high-risk exposures
Side Effects
Common (usually mild):
-
Pain/redness at injection site
-
Low-grade fever
-
Headache, dizziness
-
Nausea, vomiting
-
Muscle or joint pain
-
General fatigue
Rare but serious:
-
Allergic reactions
-
Neurological issues
-
Hypotension (low blood pressure)
How Does It Work?
The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies that neutralize the rabies virus before it can invade the nervous system.
Since the virus in the vaccine is killed (inactivated), it is completely safe and cannot cause rabies but is strong enough to trigger an effective immune response.
As post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), it stops the disease from progressing when given promptly.
Directions for Use
-
Adults: Inject IM in the deltoid muscle
-
Infants/children: Inject in the anterolateral thigh
-
Do not inject in the gluteal region (may reduce efficacy)
-
Follow the recommended dose schedule strictly
-
Use WHO-approved vaccines and aseptic techniques
-
Monitor the patient for 15–30 minutes after vaccination for allergic reactions
When Not to Use
-
Severe allergic reaction to prior rabies vaccines or their components
-
Ongoing uncontrolled neurological disorders
-
Acute illness with high fever
Drug Interactions
-
May reduce efficacy: Immunosuppressants, high-dose corticosteroids, chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine
-
Safe with: Antibiotics, tetanus vaccine, paracetamol/NSAIDs, routine immunizations
Safety Advice
-
Pregnancy: Safe in all trimesters (PEP must not be delayed)
-
Breastfeeding: Safe, no risk to infant
-
Driving/Work: Avoid strenuous activity if feeling dizzy or fatigued post-vaccination
-
Alcohol: Avoid excessive use (may weaken immunity)
General Instructions
-
Complete the full vaccination schedule without missing doses
-
Keep the injection site clean; avoid pressing or massaging
-
Wash animal bites immediately with soap and running water for 15 minutes before vaccination
-
Avoid applying irritants (like turmeric, chili, or oils) to bite wounds
Special Lifestyle Advice
-
Eat a nutritious diet and stay hydrated to support immunity
-
Avoid overexertion if feeling unwell post-vaccination
-
Follow wound care hygiene strictly
Comparison with Other Treatments
-
Rabies Vaccine (active): Builds long-term immunity
-
Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG, passive): Provides immediate, short-term protection (used for severe bites/scratches in unvaccinated patients)
-
The combination of vaccine + RIG is nearly 100% effective if administered correctly
Precautions & Warnings
-
Patients with bleeding disorders should receive with caution
-
Do not use opened or improperly stored vaccines
-
Vaccines not approved for intradermal use should not be used
-
Never freeze the vaccine (it loses potency)
Storage
-
Store at +2°C to +8°C (refrigerated)
-
Do not freeze
-
Keep in original packaging, protected from light
-
Follow proper cold chain protocols during storage and transport
