Moxifloxacin + Loteprednol Etabonate Combination
This is a combination eye drop that contains:
-
Moxifloxacin – a strong, broad-spectrum antibiotic
-
Loteprednol Etabonate – a corticosteroid with lower risk of side effects compared to traditional steroids
It is used when there is both bacterial infection and inflammation in the eye, or to prevent infection and control inflammation after eye surgery.
Components and Their Roles
Moxifloxacin
-
-
Type: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic
-
Action: Blocks bacterial enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) needed for DNA replication.
-
Purpose: Kills bacteria causing eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, or post-surgical infections.
-
-
Loteprednol Etabonate
-
Type: Corticosteroid (a “soft steroid”)
-
Action: Reduces inflammation, redness, swelling, and discomfort.
-
Purpose: Relieves pain, prevents scarring, and protects the eye from inflammatory damage — with a lower risk of raising eye pressure compared to other steroids.
-
Common Uses
-
Bacterial conjunctivitis with strong redness and swelling
-
Keratitis with inflammation
-
Post-eye surgery (like cataract surgery, LASIK) to prevent infection and control inflammation
-
Severe allergic or inflammatory eye conditions where bacterial infection is also present
Advantages
-
Broad-spectrum antibiotic + safer steroid in one drop
-
Loteprednol has less risk of glaucoma or cataract formation compared to older corticosteroids
-
Convenient — one medication instead of two separate drops
Possible Side Effects
From Moxifloxacin:
-
Temporary burning or stinging
-
Mild eye irritation
-
Rare allergic reaction
From Loteprednol Etabonate:
-
May still slightly increase intraocular pressure with prolonged use (less than other steroids)
-
Can delay healing if overused
-
Not suitable for untreated viral or fungal eye infections
Precautions
-
Should be used only under medical supervision, especially if used for longer than a week.
-
Avoid prolonged use unless monitored (to check eye pressure).
-
Not for viral (e.g., herpes simplex) or fungal eye conditions.
-
Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip.
