Naphazoline + Chlorpheniramine Combination

This is a combination eye drop commonly used for red, itchy, and allergic eyes. It contains:

  • Naphazoline – a decongestant

  • Chlorpheniramine – an antihistamine

Together, they relieve redness, watering, and itching caused by allergies or irritation.

Components and Their Roles

  1. Naphazoline

    • Type: Ocular decongestant (alpha-adrenergic agonist)

    • Action: Constricts blood vessels in the eye.

    • Purpose: Reduces eye redness and swelling quickly.

  2. Chlorpheniramine

    • Type: Antihistamine

    • Action: Blocks histamine, a chemical that triggers itching and allergic reactions.

    • Purpose: Relieves itching, watering, and irritation.

Common Uses

  • Allergic conjunctivitis (red, itchy eyes due to pollen, dust, pet dander)

  • Eye irritation from smoke, wind, or pollution

  • Seasonal allergies affecting the eyes

Advantages

  • Provides quick relief from both redness and itching.

  • Combination treats the cause (allergic reaction) and the visible symptom (redness).

  • Works within minutes and lasts for several hours.

Possible Side Effects

  • Mild stinging or burning right after use

  • Temporary blurred vision

  • Eye dryness with frequent use

  • Rarely, rebound redness if overused (blood vessels dilate again after effect wears off)

Precautions

  • Should not be used for more than a few days continuously without doctor advice — overuse can worsen redness (rebound effect).

  • Not recommended for people with narrow-angle glaucoma unless approved by an eye doctor.

  • Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip.

  • If symptoms persist, it may indicate infection or a more serious allergy and should be checked by a doctor.
