Amantadine Hydrochloride (HCl) Tablets

Manufactured by Onco India International

Overview

Amantadine Hydrochloride (HCl) is a prescription medication used for a variety of neurological and viral conditions. It is widely prescribed for:

  • Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders (Parkinsonism)

  • Influenza A virus infections (prevention and treatment)

  • Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms caused by certain medications

Amantadine acts both as an antiviral agent and a dopamine agonist, making it effective for improving motor function in Parkinson’s disease and reducing viral replication in influenza infections.

Uses

Amantadine HCl tablets are primarily prescribed for:

  1. Parkinson’s Disease & Parkinsonism – Helps reduce tremors, muscle stiffness, and slowness of movement (bradykinesia). May be used alone or with other drugs like Levodopa for better results.

  2. Influenza A Virus – Prevents and treats influenza A by stopping the virus from multiplying.

  3. Drug-Induced Movement Disorders – Relieves tremors and rigidity caused by certain antipsychotic medications.

Benefits

  • Improves motor function and flexibility in Parkinson’s disease

  • Reduces the severity and duration of influenza A symptoms

  • Helps manage side effects of other medications affecting movement

How It Works

Amantadine works in two ways:

  • Neurological effect: Stimulates dopamine receptors in the brain, enhancing dopamine activity and improving muscle control.

  • Antiviral effect: Blocks the uncoating of the influenza A virus, preventing it from multiplying and spreading.

Dosage & Administration

  • Form: Oral tablets

  • Usual dose for Parkinson’s disease: 100 mg daily, adjusted as needed by a doctor.

  • Usual dose for influenza prevention: 200 mg per day for adults.

  • Directions: Swallow whole with a full glass of water. Preferably take with food to minimize stomach upset.
