Candesartan Tablets

Category: Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB)
Form: Oral tablets

Uses:

  • Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage.

  • Management of heart failure (often in combination with other drugs like diuretics or beta-blockers).

  • Helps slow the progression of diabetic kidney disease in some patients.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Candesartan blocks angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors.

  • Angiotensin II normally causes vasoconstriction and aldosterone release, raising blood pressure.

  • By blocking its effects, candesartan causes vasodilation, reduced fluid retention, and lower blood pressure, easing strain on the heart and vessels.

Administration:

  • Taken orally once daily, with or without food.

  • Dosage may be adjusted based on blood pressure response or in heart failure treatment.

Side Effects:

  • Common: dizziness, headache, tiredness.

  • Cardiovascular: low blood pressure (especially after first dose in heart failure patients).

  • Electrolyte imbalance: increased potassium levels (hyperkalemia).

  • Other: back pain, cough (rare compared to ACE inhibitors), mild stomach upset.

  • Rare: kidney dysfunction, allergic reactions, angioedema.

Precautions:

  • Not recommended during pregnancy (risk of harm to fetus) or breastfeeding.

  • Monitor kidney function and potassium levels, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease or those taking potassium supplements/diuretics.

  • Use with caution in patients with low blood pressure, dehydration, or liver disease.

Summary:
Candesartan Tablets are an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to lower blood pressure, manage heart failure, and protect the kidneys in certain patients. They work by relaxing blood vessels and reducing fluid retention. Well tolerated compared to ACE inhibitors, candesartan can still cause dizziness, high potassium, or kidney issues, so monitoring is important.
