Ciprofloxacin Injection

  • Type: Antibiotic

  • Drug Class: Fluoroquinolone

  • Form: Sterile solution for intravenous (IV) infusion

How It Works

  • Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication.

  • This stops bacterial growth and leads to bacterial death.

  • It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, effective against many gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria.

Common Uses

Ciprofloxacin injection is used for moderate to severe bacterial infections, such as:

  • Urinary tract infections (complicated and severe)

  • Sepsis caused by gram-negative bacteria

  • Respiratory tract infections (e.g., hospital-acquired pneumonia)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Bone and joint infections

  • Intra-abdominal infections (often combined with metronidazole)

  • Typhoid fever and gastrointestinal infections

  • Anthrax exposure prophylaxis (IV form may be used in emergencies)

Advantages

  • Rapid onset of action when given IV

  • Good tissue penetration, including bones and joints

  • Effective against many drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria

  • Available as both oral and IV forms (allows step-down therapy from IV to oral)

Possible Side Effects

Most are mild but some can be serious:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Rash or allergic reaction

  • Pain or swelling at IV site

  • Rare but serious:

    • Tendon rupture or tendonitis (Achilles tendon most common)

    • Nerve problems (tingling, numbness – peripheral neuropathy)

    • Mood or mental changes (rare but reported)

    • Heart rhythm disturbances (QT prolongation in some patients)

Precautions

  • Use with caution in patients with history of tendon disorders or on corticosteroids

  • Avoid in children and pregnant women unless benefits outweigh risks (may affect growing cartilage)

  • Adjust dose in patients with kidney problems

  • Avoid unnecessary or prolonged use to prevent antibiotic resistance
