Ciprofloxacin Injection
-
Type: Antibiotic
-
Drug Class: Fluoroquinolone
-
Form: Sterile solution for intravenous (IV) infusion
How It Works
-
Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication.
-
This stops bacterial growth and leads to bacterial death.
-
It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, effective against many gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria.
Common Uses
Ciprofloxacin injection is used for moderate to severe bacterial infections, such as:
-
Urinary tract infections (complicated and severe)
-
Sepsis caused by gram-negative bacteria
-
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., hospital-acquired pneumonia)
-
Skin and soft tissue infections
-
Bone and joint infections
-
Intra-abdominal infections (often combined with metronidazole)
-
Typhoid fever and gastrointestinal infections
-
Anthrax exposure prophylaxis (IV form may be used in emergencies)
Advantages
-
Rapid onset of action when given IV
-
Good tissue penetration, including bones and joints
-
Effective against many drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria
-
Available as both oral and IV forms (allows step-down therapy from IV to oral)
Possible Side Effects
Most are mild but some can be serious:

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
-
Headache, dizziness
