What is Clotrimazole Cream?

Clotrimazole Cream is a broad-spectrum antifungal medicine applied topically to treat a wide range of fungal skin infections.

It belongs to the imidazole antifungal class and is available in several forms, such as creams, lotions, ointments, and solutions. Clotrimazole works by preventing the growth of fungi and destroying their cell membranes.

It is widely used to treat conditions such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, candidiasis, and tinea versicolor. In some cases, it is also combined with corticosteroids to treat fungal infections with inflammation.

In many regions, Clotrimazole Cream is available over the counter (OTC) without a prescription.

Uses of Clotrimazole Cream

Clotrimazole Cream is commonly prescribed for:

  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) – fungal infection between the toes.

  • Jock itch (tinea cruris) – infection of the groin area.

  • Ringworm (tinea corporis) – circular, scaly rashes on the body.

  • Candidiasis – yeast infections of the skin caused by Candida species.

  • Tinea versicolor – skin discoloration due to fungal overgrowth.

  • Mycotic diaper dermatitis – fungal rash in infants.

  • Intertrigo – fungal irritation between skin folds.

Some forms of Clotrimazole (like vaginal creams or pessaries) are also used for yeast infections in women, under medical supervision.

Benefits

  • Effective against a wide variety of fungal pathogens (Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Candida).

  • Relieves itching, redness, flaking, and irritation within days.

  • Very low systemic absorption, reducing risk of side effects.

  • Affordable and easily available.

  • Can be combined with corticosteroids for inflammatory fungal infections.

How It Works

Clotrimazole blocks the production of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Without ergosterol, the fungal cell wall weakens, causing leakage of essential substances and ultimately killing the fungus.

This direct action relieves symptoms like itching, scaling, and redness while preventing further infection.

Directions for Use

  1. Wash and dry the affected area before applying.

  2. Apply a thin layer of cream over the infected skin and surrounding area.

  3. Rub gently until absorbed.

  4. Wash your hands after application (unless treating your hands).

  5. Use twice daily (morning and night) or as directed by your doctor.

  6. Continue treatment for the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve early.

When Not to Use

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to Clotrimazole or any inactive ingredient.

  • On broken, oozing, or severely inflamed skin, unless prescribed.

  • Not suitable for ophthalmic (eye) or oral use.

  • Avoid in infants under 2 years, unless prescribed.

Safety Advice & Precautions

  • For external use only.

  • Do not cover treated areas tightly unless instructed.

  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes or weakened immunity.

  • Keep the affected area clean, dry, and ventilated.

  • If symptoms worsen or persist, consult your physician.

Possible Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated. Some people may experience:

  • Mild burning or redness

  • Skin irritation or itching

  • Rarely: blistering, swelling, or rash (stop use if these occur)

Storage Instructions

  • Store at 15–30°C (59–86°F).

  • Keep away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

  • Do not freeze.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
