Moxifloxacin + Loteprednol Etabonate Combination

This is a combination eye drop that contains:

  • Moxifloxacin – a strong, broad-spectrum antibiotic

  • Loteprednol Etabonate – a corticosteroid with lower risk of side effects compared to traditional steroids

It is used when there is both bacterial infection and inflammation in the eye, or to prevent infection and control inflammation after eye surgery.

Components and Their Roles

Moxifloxacin

    • Type: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

    • Action: Blocks bacterial enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) needed for DNA replication.

    • Purpose: Kills bacteria causing eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, or post-surgical infections.

  2. Loteprednol Etabonate

    • Type: Corticosteroid (a “soft steroid”)

    • Action: Reduces inflammation, redness, swelling, and discomfort.

    • Purpose: Relieves pain, prevents scarring, and protects the eye from inflammatory damage — with a lower risk of raising eye pressure compared to other steroids.

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis with strong redness and swelling
